That scene in Terminator 2 might have sounded completely innocent back in 1991, but rewatching it now, it’s… kind of accidentally uncomfortable. I find it interesting to see how society’s views have changed, towards both the police as an institution, and towards child safety.

I don’t think society has ‘lost its innocence’ or whatever people complain about; I can only see these changes as a net positives. Despite the ongoing existence of our society’s rape culture, we are still more likely than ever to take steps to prevent children being harmed. We’re more likely to call out police brutality and corruption. Progress is a slow process, and it’s not helped by complaining that we’ve ruined the innocence of the proverbial ‘good old times.’ I will take societal alertness to protecting people over some amorphous set of conditions that allowed you to not think about problems any day.
